SLOAN CANYON FIELD GUIDE

Choose your rooftop tent

Start with a compatible vehicle and rack. Then compare sleeping space, packed size and deployment.

Compare the Mars lineup

Tent Sleeping space / open size Packed size / tent weight Setup
Mars Basecamp Rooftop Tent 2 adults; 80.7 × 47.2 × 40.6 in 86.6 × 52.4 × 7.1 in; 114.6 lb Gas-strut-assisted opening and closing
Mars Horizon Rooftop Tent 2 adults; 82.7 × 49.2 × 42.5 in 56.7 × 42.1 × 11.4 in; 123.5 lb Ladder-assisted fold-over deployment

Both current listings include the tent with mattress, insulation liner, telescoping ladder and tool bag. Their ladders are listed at 330 lb capacity. A ladder rating is not a vehicle or rack rating.

Which footprint suits your setup?

Basecamp has a lower closed profile and a longer closed footprint. Horizon folds into a shorter closed footprint and a taller closed shell. Compare these measurements with the actual rack mounting area, hatch opening and other carried gear.

Check compatibility before ordering

  1. Identify your vehicle, roof type, rack and crossbar models.
  2. Check the vehicle and rack manufacturers’ rules for rooftop-tent use, mounting geometry and load limits.
  3. Distinguish driving/dynamic limits from parked/static limits. Include tent, mounts and other carried gear; follow the manufacturer’s method for checking occupied loads.
  4. Confirm crossbar spacing, mounting clearance and required hardware. A broad brand-compatibility statement does not approve every rack from that brand.
  5. Read the installation instructions and arrange suitable help for lifting the tent.

Plan for setup and delivery

Leave room for the ladder, unfolding tent and awning. Follow the instructions for leveling, securing and closing the tent. Freight rates and delivery details appear at checkout; review access needs and the applicable return conditions before placing a high-value order.

Specs describe manufacturer-listed sleeping capacity. Measure the usable sleeping area against your mattress and space needs rather than assuming a family size from product imagery.
